Dr. Bashir Idris is a distinguished expert in humanitarian assistance, medicine, pharmacy, and public health. He currently serves in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. His journey into healthcare was shaped by his experience growing up in Darfur, Sudan, amid ethnic conflicts and a severe lack of medical services. The challenges he witnessed firsthand motivated him to study medicine and volunteer with international humanitarian organizations during the Darfur genocide in 2003. During the initial phase of the Darfur crisis, Dr. Idris worked with Doctors Without Borders, where he treated hundreds of injured civilians and provided life-saving care to thousands suffering from infectious diseases and malnutrition. He gained critical insight into the devastating impact of state-sponsored ethnic divisions. In 2005, he joined Save the Children USA’s (SCUS) health program in West Darfur, where he led the design and implementation of healthcare services for nearly 2 million people, managing an annual budget of $6–8 million. As the Program Site Manager in Kerenik, West Darfur, Dr. Idris not only oversaw medical care, but also played a key role in mediating racially charged conflicts among displaced communities and clinic staff. His wisdom, neutrality, and ability to address the root causes of these disputes earned him the trust of all parties, allowing him to broker critical agreements, such as securing 24/7 safe passage for ambulances between camps and cities in West Darfur. His trusted leadership also encouraged local communities to take an active role in managing clinics and volunteering their labor, which amplified the impact of donor investments in healthcare infrastructure. This success led to increased funding from donors to SCUS. Dr. Idris’s work resulted in measurable improvements in healthcare outcomes in the camps he oversaw, earning him four promotions in five years, ultimately becoming Deputy Health Team Leader—the highest position available to a Sudanese national at SCUS. Driven by concerns over the sustainability of healthcare services dependent on foreign aid, Dr. Idris established the first nursing school in Darfur, located in Geneina, in 2007. This school later became part of Zalingei University and now graduates 150 nurses annually. He also renovated West Darfur’s only midwifery school, adding dormitories to accommodate students from outside Geneina. This initiative increased the graduation rate from 50 to 250 midwives per year, significantly enhancing healthcare capacity in the region. In the U.S., Dr. Idris is actively involved in helping Darfur refugees integrate into American society, encouraging them to pursue careers that align with their skills and education. He also promotes tolerance within the Sudanese diaspora, advocating for acceptance across racial, religious, and political differences, using the diversity of American society as an example. A tireless advocate for peace in Sudan, Dr. Idris maintains communication with former colleagues to explore ways to enhance the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in need. Dr. Idris is committed to using his expertise in medicine, pharmacy, and public health to improve healthcare standards in Sudan and beyond. He has ambitious plans for healthcare reform, not only in post-conflict Sudan, but across sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Idris earned his Medical Doctorate from Khartoum University, the top-ranked medical school in Sudan, and a Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Maryland, one of the top ten pharmacy schools in the U.S. He was also awarded the prestigious Sommer Scholarship for leadership at Johns Hopkins University, where he completed his Master of Public Health in 2012.
